Benjamin Lopez (aka Benji López) initially pursued music, becoming lead vocalist for Taba Co at age 15. He turned to filmmaking in his late 20s/early 30s after discovering his writing and directing abilities through an unexpected success with a short film he made while attending Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.

Born on June 16, 1974, in East Chicago, Indiana, Lopez moved to Puerto Rico at age six. He studied Communications with a focus on Media Production, working as an audiovisual technician before amassing experience directing commercials and music videos. In 2004, he co-founded Innova Entertainment and released his debut film, Tainos (2005), which earned awards at the Rincon Film Festival.

Lopez's subsequent films include Mi Verano con Amanda (trilogy) and ¿Quién Paga la Cuenta? (2013), a dramedy that became one of the Top 10 highest-grossing films in Central America.
